Title: Professor Khoja-Moolji wins Luce-AAR Grant for Advancing Public Scholarship

The Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding congratulates Shenila Khoja-Moolji, the Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani Associate Professor of Muslim Societies, for winning the Luce-American Academy for Religion grant for Advancing Public Scholarship!

The program provides grants to support scholars of religion who are working to engage publics in innovative ways.

Professor Khoja-Moolji’s project, Writing Shia Ismaili Muslim Women into Community History, will draw on findings from her forthcoming book, Rebuilding Community: Displaced Women and the Making of a Shia Ismaili Muslim Sociality (Oxford University Press, 2023) which traces the lives of Shia Ismaili Muslim women. It follows their journeys, past and present, from colonial India to East Africa and then onto North America, and outlines the everyday actions through which they create spaces of joy, forge community, and practice ethical subjectivities. By focusing on women’s efforts for their families and communities, Khoja-Moolji disrupts the conventional articulation of displaced people as dependent subjects.

The book is available through the OUP website: Rebuilding Community: Displaced Women and the Making of a Shia Ismaili Muslim Sociality (30% discount code: AAFLYG6)
